AWARDED FACULTY CHOICE

I chose to work with mirrors for a number of reasons. The type is designed to work with the mirrors to maximize the amount of time the viewer will spend reading and looking at the pieces. The design also utilizes the negative space of the laser etching to provide compositional elements that contrast with the patterns that the mirrored type creates. Most importantly, I want the viewer to see themselves reflected in the words as they read them and consider the power of the statements combined with the images the viewer creates.

Black Mirror

The White Mirror reads:

AS WHITE IS THE COLOR WHICH REFLECTS THE GREATEST NUMBER OF RAYS OF LIGHT, AND CONSEQUENTLY IS THE MOST EASILY PERCEIVED, A BEAUTIFUL BODY WILL, ACCORDINGLY, BE THE MORE BEAUTIFUL THE WHITER IT IS. - JOHANN JOACHIM WINCKELMANN (1717-1768)

The Black Mirror reads:

ONE EVER FEELS HIS TWONESS - A NEGRO; TWO SOULS, TWO THOUGHTS, TWO UNRECONCILED STRIVINGS; TWO WARRING IDEALS IN ONE DARK BODY, WHOSE DOGGED STRENGTH ALONE KEEPS IT FROM BEING TORN ASUNDER. - W.E.B. DU BOIS (1868 - 1963)
